World Vision Say Thanks

Having trouble viewing this email? Please read the online version.
We think you're brilliant Trentham School!
Thank you for your incredible fundraising efforts in this year's World Vision 40 Hour Famine.
Trentham School raised a grand total of $171.00 for Malawi. Well done! All your efforts will make a huge impact on lives that really need your help, and will go towards providing food for 21 desperately hungry children. From Malawi’s children and us at World Vision, thank you so much!
But where exactly did the funds go this year?
Malawi is one of the world’s poorest nations. The funds generously donated are being used to improve:
  • Farming techniques: World Vision is providing livestock and crop training so families have regular harvests, and can feed their families all year round!

  • Nutrition: It’s not just how much you eat, but what you eat that prevents malnutrition. World Vision is providing seeds and training households on how to grow a diverse range of fruits and vegetables – many of which are hardy in drought so children can have a varied diet full of nutrient-rich food.

  • Community health: World Vision is working to provide quality healthcare at a community level to help children grow up without the threat of preventable illnesses. Plus, by educating communities about hand washing and good hygiene, World Vision is aiming to decrease the spread of disease.
Check out the video to see exactly how your school's funds are going to help.
Trentham School has been a part of New Zealand’s biggest youth fundraising movement, and helped celebrate forty years of the World Vision 40 Hour Famine. Since the start, Kiwis like you have raised over $72 million to fight hunger via this huge community fundraising event! Go Kiwis!
Thanks for joining us in the fight against hunger. We can’t wait to see you and Trentham School again next year!

Watch to see how the gift of goats has helped Thomas and his children grow strong and healthy after years of malnutrition.

Mike is six-years-old but the height of an average Kiwi three-year-old. Years of malnutrition has stunted the growth of his little body.

With the support of World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine Mike’s family has been given a goat. This means they now have more nutritious food, can pay for school fees, and breed the goats to sell. Mike can now grow up healthy, strong and learn skills to keep his family out of the cycle of poverty.

School Assembly

We shared our inquiry for the year with the school at Assembly on Friday.

Child Poverty Speech….

N: Introduce: This year the Te Roopu Kaiarahi has decided to do something around Child Poverty.
Child Poverty is lack of food, shelter, warmth, water, education, health & opportunities for a good life. Even though in New Zealand we do experience some poverty, it is nothing compared to other countries in the world. Watch this please...

Clips..Malawi

C: On the 21st of May Michelle Griffiths came to our Te Roopu Kaiarahi meeting and shared with us about the 40 hour famine. Michelle Griffiths is from the World Vision Group. She talked a lot about the environment in Malawi, Africa. Malawi is a very poor country due to drought. There is not enough food for people to eat. Even though we didn’t do the 40 hour Famine we are still going to fundraise money for Malawi. You will hear more from us about what we are hoping to do to raise money.

C: Te Roopu Kaiarahi choose “Child Poverty” as our over all year project because its very important to us that kids have the same type of lives as us kiwi kids.

N: so thats why we choose child poverty over the other suggestions!!!!!

Child Poverty

We have decided this year as a student leadership group to do an inquiry about 'Child Poverty'.

Today we had a visitor come and speak to us about the 40 Hour Famine and child poverty in Malawi. We found out Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world.

Poverty is a lack of some of these things...

Food
Shelter
Warmth
Clothing
Clean Water
Education
Health
Opportunities for a good life

We want to help and we will be talking about ideas we could do to raise money to support World Vision who help children living in Poverty.

Introduction

Welcome to our student leaders' blog for 2014. We are a group of 12 students in Year 6 who work together to plan events for the school, listen to student ideas and think about ways we can improve our school as well as the wider community. This year we will try to keep you in touch with what we are up.
